For some time, there's been buzz about a sequel to I Am Legend, with Will Smith and director Francis Lawrence collaborating on the script. Francis Lawrence, who directed the original film, was expected to lead the project after he wraps up his current work on the upcoming Hunger Games prequel. However, recent developments indicate Warner Bros. might want a new vision for the follow-up. They've set their sights on Steven Caple Jr., the director known for Creed II and more recently, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. This shift in direction was hinted at by producer Akiva Goldsman during a conversation with Deadline.

Goldsman shared some updates during Comic-Con, revealing that he has completed a second draft of the script for the sequel after meetings with both Jordan and Smith. Additionally, Goldsman confirmed that the storyline for the new film will follow the alternative ending of the original I Am Legend. In this alternate conclusion, rather than sacrificing himself, Neville discovers the Darkseekers possess a sophisticated intelligence and societal structure, leading them to spare his life.

With these developments, it's clear that I Am Legend 2 is progressing, albeit with some significant changes to its creative direction. Fans of the original should note that the sequel will build on the movie's alternate ending, not the one shown in the theatrical release.
