The European Union continues its examination of major technology firms to ensure they adhere to newly established regulations designed to create fair competition within the digital market. Recently, attention has shifted to Apple's iPad operating system, which is under scrutiny for its compliance with these important guidelines set forth by the EU.
Assessment of Apple's iPad Operating System
EU antitrust authorities will evaluate whether the operating system utilized by Apple for its iPads aligns with the groundbreaking regulations intended to limit the influence of large technology companies. The European Commission made this announcement on Monday, following Apple's release of a compliance report regarding its iPad operating system. In April, the commission had identified this operating system as a crucial platform for businesses seeking to connect with consumers.
Compliance Evaluation Process
The commission will systematically analyze whether the measures implemented for the iPad operating system effectively meet the obligations outlined by the Digital Markets Act. The assessment will also incorporate feedback from various stakeholders with vested interests in the matter.
Apple has not yet provided a response to requests for comment.
Requirements of the Digital Markets Act
The Digital Markets Act, which became effective earlier this year, mandates that Apple enable users to choose their preferred default web browser on iPads, permit the existence of alternative app stores on its operating system, and allow external devices like headphones and smart pens to access features of the iPad operating system.
Infringements of the Digital Markets Act could result in substantial penalties for companies, potentially amounting to 10 percent of their global annual revenues.
